Revolt Fitness Week 8

Last week, Aunt Flo was in town. Even though I ate less, I still gained weight. I hardly exercised last week because of the cramps. Got two days in. Was not a happy woman. I hope I done the calculations right. Im was at 160 on Friday. I was 156.4 this morning. My body fat increased, along with weight last week. I also installed a fitness app on my phone, which tracks body fat percentage, weight, the skin fold measurements, and the body measurements. I think my waist measurement may be off. Im not sure you can gain 4.5 inches in a week. Maybe you can. I am back doing my workouts this week. Taking a few days off is not a good thing, cycle or no cycle. I was in pain doing the warm-up. Body was not as loose.

My Review:

For me, I am not a big fan of new music. I love 90's R&B and some 90's hip-hop songs. I wanted to review the collection because I knew some of the songs (all of them, except Beastie Boys, Jay-Z, and Run D.M.C.). I enjoyed the music, especially Hey Ya, California Love, and Gangsta's Paradise. I also loved how the songs were instrumentals versus the music with vocals. I listened to the music while relaxing at night. I also have the Christian Rock, I am reviewing as well. That review will be posted shortly.

Songs included:

  • Hey Ya (originally by Outkast)
  • California Love (originally by 2Pac)
  • The Real Slim Shady (originally by Eminem)
  • Gangsta's Paradise (originally by Coolio)
  • Girls (originally by Beastie Boys)
  • Rock Box (originally by Run-D.M.C)
  • Summertime (originally by DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince)
  • Regulate (originally by Warren G)
  • Big Pimpin (originally by Jay-Z)
  • Nuthin' But A "G" Thang (originally by Dr. Dre)
The music is available on itunes, a download card, or a cd, depending on your preference. The download card is 9.99. The cd is 14.99. The cd also includes a digital download of the music, so you can listen immediately. Itunes is 7.99, but you can also buy each song for .99 each.

Emotional Assault: Recognizing an abusive partner's bag of tricks by Lisa Kroulik Book review (Tomoson)

I read by Emotional Assault: Recognizing an Abusive Partner's Bag of Tricks Lisa Kroulik, in exchange for honest review from Tomoson. I chose to read the book because I have been emotionally abused before.

The book starts out with Lisa describing emotional abuse she experienced in a prior relationship. The man appeared nice in the beginning, but his behavior changed. \There were red flags, but Lisa chose to ignore them. The ex would say hurtful things, but Lisa remained silent. She later married him and divorced him (yay).

The book also described tricks, an emotional abuser uses. Tip 1 is the silent treatment. The silent treatment can be used as a method of control. Your partner (whether him or her) will refuse to communicate with you or ignore you when you are around. The tactic is used to get you to drop the issue and apologize, but the problem is still not fully resolved. The silent treatment can cause tension and frustration in relationships.

Other tips include:

  • Turning the tables. Turning the issue around to the other person to get the blame off of your partner. What about what you have done?It is a form of manipulation. He or she may even twist your words to fit the situation.
  • Poor me is a tactic a partner uses to think you have deeply hurt him or her. It elicits compassion and sympathy. Other people may feel sorry for you partner as well, making you feel as if you was the one in the wrong.  Details may be altered to elicit more compassion.
  • You're not perfect either. This tactic can be a form of condemnation and manipulation. No one is perfect and we all have flaws. Once again, the focus is off your partner and on to you, especially if yall share the same flaws. For example, he cheated on you. you cheated on  him. but (s)he makes you feel worse. (s)he may not be willing to change, but using you as a scapegoat to continue in their behavior. The tactic also may be used to make you feel more guilty about your actions and prevent problem resolution.
  • Rewriting history. This tactic allows the emotional abuser to go back and change how things really happened. Rewriting history is a form of image control. The makes your partner look good versus bad. Rewriting history is also lying. No truth in his or her statements. It also can be combined with other psychological constructs (justification, projection, and denial, for example).
  • But I'm a really good person. This trick also helps the abuser present his or herself in a good light. The abuser may act offended if you point out their bad behavior. They may also turn the tables on you. He or she may also incorporate the poor me trick to make themselves appear in a different light.
  • You're not very forgiving. This trick allows the abuser to cause you shame and guilt. Your partner may want forgiveness, but wants to continue in their bad behavior. Instead of resolving the issue, once again the tables are turned on you. I am definitely noticing how these tricks can be combined together. Lisa gave the example of how her ex used to say she was holding a grudge, instead of forgiving him. This trick can cause additional emotional hurt/damage. Also may increase repression. You may hold your feelings in because your partner won't be there for you to bring your problems and concerns to. There is a lack of accountability as well. Lisa also discusses how demanding forgiveness is not love.
  • It's all a misunderstanding (and other tricks). The last trick(s) in the book may include:
  • a. your approach is wrong. The example Lisa gave was when her and her ex went to counseling. Her ex did not open up during counseling. When she would get upset, her ex would say her approach was wrong. It is a form of distraction. It is a form of manipulation.
  • animal abuse.
Lisa also provided effects of a toxic relationship. Some effects included:
  • increased stress (mental , physical, psychological, and physiological).
  • repression
  • anxiety
  • post traumatic stress disorder
Finally, the book provided a section on should I stay or should I go. The decision will not be easy. The author also provides reasons you will hear while making your decision. Some of the reasons, which I have heard before include:

  • God hates divorce
  • Just keep waiting and praying

Cooking with Home canned foods book review (Tomoson)

I reviewed Cooking with Home canned foods, in exchange for review from Tomoson. The book was written by Rhiana Jones. The link contains my affiliate link.

The book discussed how to cook with canned foods. The book is not about cooking with canned goods, but food, people can themselves. My grandma used to can and jar her own vegetables. My daddy and niece love to pickle peppers from my mama garden. Instead of letting canned foods sit on the shelf, the book helps you get the cans off the shelves and incorporate them into cooking.

The book provides recipes, in addition to preservation and canning websites for your reference. Some of my favorite recipes was the desserts and salsas. I loved the chicken and salsa casserole and stuffed peppers. I also liked the black bean quesadillas. I love beans (pinto, black, navy, kidney, chili). I will have to try the quesadillas at some point in the future. The chicken taco soup sounds good as well. It is a slow cooker recipe, which means I don't have to slave over a hot stove and it fits into my healthier lifestyle.

For fruits and Veggie, I liked the Peach Horchata and Pumpkin Pancakes. I also liked the strawberry trifle and strawberry banana smoothie.

Each chapter focuses on one ingredient or canned/preserved item, such as corn, beans, mushrooms, and jams. The book was a quick read on the kindle. The book is .99 on Amazon and free to borrow on Kindle.

Princess Sophia and the Frog Book Review (Tomoson)

I read Princess Sophia and the Frog, in exchange for honest review from Tomoson. The book was sponsored by Happy Language Kids, LLC. The book was written by Suzy Liebermann.

My review:

The book is about Princess, who was bored. One day, she meets a frog, who helps her have some fun. The graphics are colorful. The words rhyme, but not all the time. It was a cute, children's book. The princess and the frog went on an adventure to find happiness, while avoiding negativity. The Princess made a new friend with the frog. The book was a quick read as well. The book is 5.99 on Amazon and free to borrow with Amazon Prime members.

This week as a special needs parent

The past few weeks have been interesting, but this week takes the cake. Toss in a cycle and you have mama, filled with extra-emotions. I have not even exercised but once this week and broke my diet, a lot. Really hate to do the weigh-in later on tonight.

Anyway, Kalen has a global delay. He is delayed in walking, talking, and fine motor. Brad is autistic and adhd. Kalen is 2 and Brad is 12.

Kalen's ECI referred Kalen to a neurologist, who requested an EEG, EKG, audiology, and genetics testing. Kalen did excellent in Audiology. He has perfect hearing, even though he lost interest during the examination. Throwing a two-year old in an audio booth, with toys, is trouble lol.

So, this was my week--this week.

Monday:

Kalen had Physical Therapy. He did excellent. Ms. Sandy even had him practicing outside on the sidewalk. He walked, with one finger holding Sandy, from the sidewalk to the house and back. She said with his progress (if he continues like he is doing), he may be walking by Thanksgiving.

Tuesday:

I had an eye doctor appointment to replace my glasses. I did an exam and picked out my new thin, black frames. Why I am replacing them? My wonderful son, Kalen, broke off both handles. I went to the dollar store, bought some reading glasses, installed new handles on my glasses, he broke those off too, along with the brackets.

Later that day, Kalen had early childhood intervention. He did excellent. He played with the toys. It was also a sad day. It was Lisa's last day of working with Kalen. Everyone had to re-apply for their jobs. Lisa chose not to re-apply, so she can focus on school. She also mentioned the department lost at least 10 other people (those, who chose not to re-apply and terminations). This means over 300 kids do not have a therapist. The week before Lisa had told me to go on an advocate-emailing spree to get a new therapist for Kalen. Luckily, Lisa found him one or one was assigned to him, since he needs help with transitioning. Kalen will conclude both ECI and PT through Keep Pace in May. He also starts school in May (Head Start and a school for developmental disabilities). I will miss Lisa. She has worked with Kalen since he was 1 years old.

This was not supposed to been an ECI day, but Lisa is having surgery, I think today, and wanted to see Kalen.

Wednesday:

Brad had an new pediatric appointment at LBJ hospital. The appointment was at 12:45. The appointment lady told me to be there an hour early. I got there around 10:30. My mother dropped us off. After navigating the hospital, we finally found the pediatric clinic. I signed in. The registration lady said I was early. (No, for real). I sat down. My kids, my lovely kids, was fighting with each other. Pushing the stroller. and hungry. I fed them before leaving the house. I went to the vending machines on another floor, where the machine was fancy. The machine did not accept dimes, nickels, or pennies.

I also gave Brad his risperidone to calm him down BEFORE leaving the house. I gave him a smaller dosage of Melatonin to calm him down. None of it worked. Brad was good until they brought him back to take his vitals. The nice nurse, Ms. Wesley wanted Brad to get on the scale. This meant taking off his shoes and backpack. He screamed a loud, piercing scream. Would not cooperate. Finally when Ms. Wesley left the room, Brad took off his shoes, took off his backpack, stood on the scale, and another nurse ran quickly into the room, to get his weight. He also let her take his height.

We was getting ready to go into another waiting room, when another nurse said the room was ready. The children tore up paperwork out my purse, knocked over stuff in my purse, was screaming, hollering, fighting again. The dr, a resident came in. He asked me a bunch of questions. He did not access Brad at all, except his heart. On a good note, Brad has lab work next week (have to change the appointment. Overbooked myself accidently), will get a referral to a dentist, and will get a referral to a autism clinic.

Then, had to wait over an hour for my mother to pick us back up. Brad was starting to act up badly. He laid in the middle of the floor, by the sliding doors. He banged on the windows. Kalen slept the whole time during the middle of this. We was at the hospital from 1030 am to 430 pm. Too long if you ask me, especially for a mama, dealing with Aunt flo, and two special needs kids.

Thursday:

Kalen had an MRI and EEG scheduled at Texas Children's. I had no sleep since I had to get up before 5 am to get to the hospital at 6 am. I had to sign him in at one building, then walk to another room for vitals, then go to another building for the actual test. While waiting, I went to get something to eat. I had no idea how to get back. I knew what building he was in and what floor. Everyone I had asked did not know where radiology was. I ended up walking past the building I needed back to pediatric radiology registration to ask where I needed to go. I finally found my baby. Within minutes of me coming back, Kalen was brought into recovery, where they woke him up quick. Yay me. Kalen's EEG was in an hour. I wanted him to stay sleep. I found my way to the EEG room. Same building, Express elevator, 21st floor. Signed him in. Kalen went from waking up from MRI to active baby. He was crawling. He was climbing. He was trying to walk. He was pushing the stroller.

The lady in the EEG waiting room said the EEG person could take me an hour early since she had no one back there. So on, we went to the EEG room. It was made for sleeping. A big sofa bed and soft cushiony chairs for sitting and sleeping for the parents/guardians. The tech wanted Kalen to go back to sleep. Kalen was not having that. I presented him a boobie and between crying, screaming, and trying to unplug the wires, Kalen and I both went to sleep. Eventually, the tech came back into the room, woke me up, and told me to wake Kalen up. Kalen never woke up until I got home 2-3 hours later. The poor lady flashed lights in his face, called his name, flashed more lights in his face, and Kalen refused to stir. His hands moved. his body moved, but his eyes said, hey man, he is tired, leave him be lol.

I got home and crashed. My internet was down. Didn't feel like checking my email from the phone. I was tired. I said, screw it, and went to sleep.

Friday:

No therapies for any child today. I woke up about 10-ish. I been trying to clean all day long.  I got some work done. My youngest done pulled my mirror off the back of the closet door, with the door screws as well. He also left me a nice surprise when I went to do laundry. I put him in his crib, with the bed made. Came back, to see a naked baby, with all the bedding pulled off, except the bottom sheet.

Monday, Brad has a psych appointment. Wednesday, Kalen has an ECG appointment. Let's get next week started.

The matrix and the alice books book review, tour, and giveaway by Voicu Mihnea Simandan (Charisma Bloggers).

I read the Matrix and Alice books by Voicu Mihnea Simandan, in exchange for honest review for Charisma Media/Charisma Bloggers.

About the book: (From media kit).

The Matrix and the Alice Books presents aspects of intertextuality in three primary sources: the script of the motion picture The Matrix written by directors Andy and Larry Wachowski, and the books Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass by Lewis Carroll. Intertextuality is a set of relations with other texts, which can include direct quotations, allusions, literary conventions, imitation, parody and unconscious sources amongst others. In The Matrix there are few explicit references to Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass.

This book by Voicu Mihnea Simandan presents both the explicit references and the less direct ones, giving evidence from primary and secondary sources. In doing so, it makes use of a literary construction developed from Gérard Genette’s structuralist theory of transtextuality as a framework to present how a web of intertextual relationships is clearly formed between the Alice books and The Matrix.

Excerpt: (from media kit)

“In The Matrix, Neo comes from the Oracle a bit disappointed with what he had just found out, but Morpheus tries to show him the way: “Neo, sooner or later, you’re going to realize, just as I did, that there’s a difference between knowing the path... and walking the path...” Alice wakes up only when she is ready to face the real world, just as Neo has to understand that, in order to defeat the agents and end the war, he has to face his demons and take control of his own life. […]

In The Matrix, Cypher confesses his regrets to Neo over getting unplugged. “You know, I know what you’re thinking, because right now I’m thinking the same thing. Actually, I’ve been thinking it ever since I got here... Why, oh why, didn’t I take... the blue pill?” The repeated phrase shows hesitation and the intensity of Cypher’s emotions. Neither Alice nor Cypher understand the new world they have entered, and both have second thoughts about remaining there. But, while Alice tries to unlock the secret of wonderland and eventually is able to control it, just as Neo does in the end, Cypher betrays his crew members in a desperate move to be reinserted into the Matrix. Despite an ever-changing environment and logic, both Alice and Neo continue to deal with the challenges that beset them. No prior experience in wonderland or the Matrix can teach them about what to expect in their next undertaking; nevertheless they manage to get through each encounter, ready to face new situations.”

My review:

The book compares three literary works: The matrix, Alice in wonderland, and through the looking glass. I chose the book because it was different from what I normally read. Not a novel or a novella or a poetry collection. The author is comparing similarities, meaning, messages, and relationships.

The book wants to compare the following:
  • Genette's intertextuality: direct quotations and allusions
  • Paratextuality: illustrations and captions
  • architextuality: literary conventions
  • metatextuality: explicit and implicit comments
  • hypertextuality: elaboration of ideas.
The book definitely makes me glad I took psychology. I have written literary reviews before. This review was in-depth. Voicu also cites his sources. yay. The first few chapters discussed intertextuality and the different types of intertextuality. Chapter 3 starts discussing the Matrix. The Matrix was created by the Wachowski Brothers in 1999. I did not know the Matrix was a book, prior to becoming a movie. I have seen all three movies, but have not read any of the Matrix books. The Matrix definitely changed the face of cinema. I loved how Neo lived in a perceived reality, and then later found out it was an illusion. This concept can apply to life. For example, people can be in a relationship and think everything is ok, when the other is plotting an escape route.

Chapter 4 discusses Alice. Alice in wonderland and through the looking glass was written by Lewis Carroll. I have read both books. Love me some Carroll. The book is children's. The book is fantasy and illusion.

I do like how in the Matrix, Neo has to take either the red pill or the blue pill. In Alice in wonderland, Alice takes a pill to be bigger or smaller. Also, Both Alice and Neo are/was living in a dream-like state. Neo thought his world was real, while Alice visited an alternate reality, filled with a Queen of Hearts, A March Hare. White Rabbit, A Mad Hatter,  Tweedle Dee and Dum, and the Cheshire Cat.

The author also discussed studies, which compared the Alice books to the Matrix. Some similarities included:
  • The books focus on alternate realities. Nothing is truly what it seems.
  • Each book has two settings: the alternate world and the real world. Alice is in the real world at the beginning and end of the book, while in Wonderland for most of the Book. Neo starts off in the perceived real world, but travels through the matrix..
  • Both movies have a lot of visual effects.
  • Both books challenge what is real and what is not real.
  • Both books have a set of rules or lack of rules, which are challenged and/or broken.
  • Each book is filled with strange characters: friends and foes. When I think Alice, I think of the Caterpillar blowing smoke rings or the rabbit saying he's late, he's late. There is also the infamous Queen of Hearts. I think of the Matrix, I think of Morpheus, Trinity, and the Oracle. I also think of the Agents.

Some differences:
  • The Alice books is fantasy-based, while the Matrix is more science-fiction.
  • The Alice books stimulates your imagination, while the Matrix stimulates questions (What is reality? Are we living in the Matrix). Funny story, I know a few folks, who thought we are really living in a Matrix.
  • Alice does not know she is experiencing a dream, until the end of the book. Neo realizes something is different in his perceived reality.

Bookoo Yard Sales

I reviewed Bookoo Yard sales and classifieds website, in exchange for honest review. I received a premiere membership, in addition to a t-shirt for participation in the campaign.

Bookoo is a yard sales and classifieds website. You sign up, using the city, which is closet to you, similar to Craigslist. You can even import your Craigslist ads into Bookoo. You can post and respond to ads. The website also has a barter, free, lost and found, wanted, and yard sale section.

A basic membership to Bookoo is free, but you can also sign up for premiere memberships. A basic membership lets you post ads and 1 photo per ad. A basic membership can post up to 10 ads. A premium membership lets you post 5 photos, unlimited items, longer descriptions, etc. The premium membership is $8 for a monthly membership. $20 dollars for 3 months, and $35 dollars for 6 months. The website has some very nice items, for example, children's clothes. Nice.

Another great feature is the availability calender. You can set your availability to when people can meet with you. You also have the money tree, which allows you to track sales.

I posted a few ads on the site (wanted and for sale). I have not had any hits yet except for Kalen's old bassinet, but the person changed their mind. That was weird for me. Someone had sent a message Saturday night, asking about the bassinet. I posted the bassinet online for free. I responded back, I can meet up after church on Sunday, after 12 pm. During Sunday School, my phone kept vibrating, and I checked the messages. The person wanted more pictures of the bassinet. I wasn't sure how many more photos was needed of a simple bassinet. I took pictures from all angles. I texted back, I could take more pics once I got home from church. The person then texted back, they did not want the bassinet. I was not sure what I did wrong, but hopefully I will get another hit on the bassinet.

I also put my candy safe online. I bought the safe a few years ago to store Brad's candy in. It is a 40 dollar safe. The last time, I checked Wal-mart, the same safe was $58 dollars. I don't need the safe anymore since I stopped buying Brad all that candy. Instead of buying 20-30 dollars worth of candy each month, I buy 1 to 2 packs. It also did not help Brad learned how to open the lock with the keys, he took out my purse lol.

The website also offers ways to earn a premium membership, such as placing a decal on the back of your car. The decal is $5 and you get a free life-time premiere membership. I may buy one to put on my mama's car, when she not looking :-). You also can pass out business cards to your peers, family, and others. Another way is to refer friends. You can earn a week for each 5 valid friends, who join.
