A few weeks ago, May 27th, we had a blackout because of lightening and thunderstorms. While I do not like lightening and thunderstorms, the parent in me, was happy, because my kids do not like rain. Both kids normally go to bed early, during bad storms. Yay, I can rest. I can breath. I can do some cleaning in peace.
This night, it was different.
Brad did go to bed early. I saw him, winding down, on the couch, so I quickly gave him, his night meds, and let him crash. Kalen, on the other hand, decided to defy expectations, and not go to bed, until late. I gave him, his seizure meds. I gave him, a bath and rubbed him with lavender lotion, but he did not crash. I gave him melatonin too.
He took the blackout, hard, because the lights was off. The wifi was down. Youtube was no more. It didn't help that the kindle and laptop had also died early too. I had no options to entertain him. I do have a usb-powered light, which I cut on, so he wouldn't be completely scared. He kept asking me to turn on the lights and the phone. I had to remind him, that I was not God. Saying let there be light was not going to work.
I had somewhere to be, the next morning. Kalen had his bi-annual cardiology appointment. I did not want to go to bed before the lights came back on so I can make sure the alarms are still set. What saved me was I remembered I had an battery-powered alarm clock, on a shelf in the closet. I also grabbed the mini sound machine. I don't know when I got it, but I was hoping one of those sounds, would help calm Kalen down. It didn't. I definitely recommend people get a battery-powered alarm clock. Smart devices do crash and nothing like having an alternative. I had not used the clock or sound machine, in a while because my kids liked to knock it over. I got tired of resetting the clock and the alarm, so I put it up in the closet. The sound machine is now under the bed for emergencies. The clock is still standing (Kids knocked it down once) on my side table.
Kalen tried to entertain his self by looking out the window at other people, walking by. I rocked him. Nothing would calm him down to save my life. I was at a lost, this night.
Eventually, we both crashed. The lights came back on at 1:30 am. I quickly put all devices, back on the charger, before any kid woke up. I was glad Brad slept through the blackout because I could sense a meltdown, once he realized, the television would not come on.

Wet N Wild Splashtown Review (USFG)
Disclaimer: This post was sponsored by US Family Guide Bloggers Program. I received 4 tickets for participation. We also paid for one extra ticket.

When I was a kid, the family use to go to Splashtown, now called Wet N Wild Splashtown, during the summer, usually on the 4th of July to see the fireworks. There was nothing like laying in the wavepool watching the lights in the sky. I also liked floating along the lazy river.
Times have changed and I went to experience the park with my kids, which is a challenge in itself, since both are not big fan of water.
The first thing I noticed was the lockers have changed. The old key and deposit system went away and replaced with a code system and no deposit. You have three sizes of lockers: small, large, and jumbo. I paid for a Jumbo, which was $20. The jumbo had lot of room for me and my kids backpacks. When paying, you choose a code for your locker. The receipt has your locker number on it. You go to the locker and enter your code on the keypad and open the locker. When you are ready to leave for the day, there is a red button under the keypad, which says end (or something like that).
I looked at the attractions online before I went to see what was appropriate for my kids to play on. The best area was Wet n Wild Jr, a children's area. The water was 2 ft deep. It had climbing things, a mini slide, and a giant water bucket, which fills with water and dumps it out whenever.
Other kids areas include the Treehouse and Blue Lagoon Activity Pool. The kids had fun playing in the water without my assistance. I did help Kalen and my great niece with the steps on the mini slide and helped them once they slid down, but other than that, the kids had fun playing in the water.

Check out the New Wet n Wild SplashTown (USFG)
Disclaimer: This post was sponsored by US Family Guide Bloggers Program
When I was a child, we spent a a few days each summer at SplashTown. I loved the wave ride and the lazy river. I have not been back to SplashTown since the early 2000s but it is a great time to take the kids back and let them experience the magic of the water park.
Wet n Wild Splashtown is Houston's largest and closest water park with over 80 acres of fun. The park offers something for everyone with rides, which include the Tornado, RipQurl, and Texas Freefall. Experience the new attractions, which include Big Kahuna, a thrill raft ride, which takes you on a white water journey filled with alternating tunnels, twists, and turns. Or try out Wet and Wild jr, an interactive ride for children of all ages. Children can also improve skills on FlowRider double.

Back to the Bahamas Part 1
Back to the Bahamas Part 1: Carnival Ecstasy August 22nd to 25th
Port: Miami, Florida to Nassau Bahamas and Paradise Island (boat trip)
In August, I went back to the Bahamas with my mother again. We also brought along a bunch of first timers: my kids, annoying sisters, nieces, nephew, and great-niece. 9 people total and I will never do this again.
(Note: I was working on the multimedia portion of my thesis, while in the car, and finished up as soon as I got on the boat. $25 dollars of cruise credit to get my project turned in on time. I had limited internet from Louisiana to Florida. I was revising text and creating audio transcripts of the videos, on top of dealing with annoying relatives.)
My plan was to go on a 4-day trip to Mexico, Honduras, and Belize from Galveston. Get a past guest discount for my mother and myself, plus a Texas resident discount. The trip was reasonably priced-4 islands, 4 days.
The drive to Galveston is not that far either, but that was not good enough for some of my heathen family. Some of my relatives don’t like Hispanics, especially Mexicans. They refused to spend 24 hours in Mexico, so after some cussing and discussion, we decided to go to Miami to the Bahamas.
I already knew this trip would not be fun. At first, I had 3 people in my room and my mother had five. My other sister was supposed to go to Africa this summer. Then, she decided to bring my nephew. My mother removed my nephew from the cruise.
Now we have my kids and myself in my room and the rest in the other room. 3 doors down from each other.
Fast forward, sister and nephew decide not to go to Africa and want to be added back. My mother still has a five person room-so nephew went to her room. My room already paid for and I had to relocate my room wayyyyy down the hallway for a 4 person, 4 bed room, when all I need is 2 beds. One for me and Kalen and one for Brad.
I also had to chip in monies for my sister’s fare because my mother did not have enough. She also got part of my cruise credits, I been earning. Whoopee. Over 100 dollars and I have to share when my room was fully paid for months in advance.
Sister planned on crashing in one of the beds in my mother room. 5 beds. Niece and Great niece in same bed; nephew; other annoying sister; and mother, in other 4 beds.
I kept bumping my head into that darn upper bed. I kept the big bed for myself and let Brad climb up. I wanted a no pee zone.
By the first day, the sisters had a fight and the younger sister got a new room, which is what she should have done in the first place with her son. She wanted her cruise credit transferred to her new room. Problem was she only earned $10 dollars after she was added to my room and she was upset. Love Carnival. Leave my credits alone.
The rest of the trip on the boat, was special needs hell.
I couldn't get my kids to stay in Camp Carnival. I ended up with 2 hours free without my kids over 3 days. When they did go, all they did was sleep Went to Super Star Karaoke and Karaoke. Didn’t attempt to sing because I kept staring at the Camp’s phone.Brad peed in the bed. Instead of just changing the sheets or the mattresses, the steward cleaned the carpet (which needed cleaning due to Brownies and Cake), and put a carpet smeller puller outer in the room. I went back to my room later and saw that noisy device, when my kids needed to sleep. Turned it off. Then I got a knock on the door from the assistant housekeeping woman saying if my kids make a mess in the bed, take them to medical. Told her, I have two SPED kids, who wet the bed, and accidents do happen. She didn’t not understand at all and I didn’t care. One kid was sleepy and needed his medication.
Brad had a major meltdown after Kalen went to Camp Carnival for the first time. Took over an hour to calm him down. It was time to give him his meds anyway plus Mr.. Melatonin. We was heading to formal dinner and by the time, I got him calm and went back to Windsong, the line was longer. We got a pager saying it will be a 30 minute wait, but as soon as we walked away, the pager went off. By the time, the food arrived, the pager went off and I had to go get Kalen. Youngest sister sat with Brad, while I ran to the Verandah deck (11 from deck 8).
Kalen refused to walk in the Bahamas. His feet broke out a few weeks ago. I forgot to bring socks. After going to multiple stores, looking for socks, I learned most of them don’t accept credit cards. I finally had to go to an ATM (Thank you Blogher for the payment a few days before) to get some Bahamian money to buy the boy some socks, and he still did not want to walk.
We took a water ferry to Paradise Island to see Atlantis. Took some convincing to get Brad on the boat. The tour guide let Brad sit up front with the captain.
While we was in Louisiana, we stopped at a gas station/McDonalds station to eat and go potty. I took Brad to change his diaper and pants. On the way out, we passed through the gas station part because I didn't have McDonalds money. He wanted some M &Ms. He took some M& Ms and walked out the door. The cashier stopped him and I gave them back. He got angry and pushed the main door so hard, it fell off the hinges.
I had a major panic attack on the last day of the cruise. I packed up all the non-essentials and set it outside the room. I packed the kids bags with their diapers, wipes, and extra clothes; cleaned out my purse for extra room, if I needed it; and re-organized the bag of chargers. I had 5 bags: my purse, Kalen bag, Brad bag, the laptop, and bag of chargers for the devices.
We walked one way to head to the Sapphire Lounge for Faster to the Fun people, but it was blocked off. Walked another way and the police was having a situation with a woman. I couldn’t move anymore. My cycle on. I got 4 bags in one arm. I am sweating, hurting, and struggling with Kalen. I sat there until the police moved.
Finally got to Sapphire, sat down, and it was time to move again. Can’t find my phone. Went back in. Kids acting up again. I broke down crying. Couldn’t take it anymore.
Asked for help multiple times since I have SPED kids. Finally someone told me I can get a wheelchair and I could carry Kalen in my lap. I was eventually wheeled down to customs, while Brad walked and someone held Kalen’s hand. I just wanted off the boat and in my bed at home. I wanted to be left alone. Of course that was not the case..
To be continued..............

Simple enough. I carry three bags. Brad carries his bag and Kalen carries his bag. EXCEPT Kalen did not want to walk and moved extra slow. I had to carry his bag so he would move faster and he did not.

Yesterday and today, I sent my children off to school in the rain.
Yesterday, I got up at 6 something, later than normal because Kalen (aka Midget) kicked my phone on the floor. I got him into the bath and dressed quickly, and we headed downstairs to catch the bus. Kalen's bus comes at 7:19 a.m.
Since Kalen is 3, I have to walk him to the bus and pass him on to the bus aide. The bus driver, asked me about why I didn't call my child out of school, like the other parents did?
Because my children do not have a choice in their education. They will get up for school, by me. Take a bath, with assistance, and get on the bus even if I have to drag them to the end of the drive way.
That is how is was when I grew up. I loved going to school. I loved graduating high school. I loved my cap and gown. If you didn't go to school or church, you couldn't go anywhere else. I didn't go anywhere but still just in case, I went to school.
I got myself up. Dressed myself. Woke my mother up so she can get the other two sisters up. Walked to the bus stop. Went to school. Repeated for four years. On the rare occasion, I would walk the hour to school. Took the bus the same distance. The school was 5 minutes by car, so sometimes we got a ride.
If my brats are not sick or do not have a doctor's appointment, they will be at school. A little rain, a thunder storm, or a flood warning isn't going to stop them. The bus comes to their driveway, a bell man helps them with their bags and seats, and the chauffeur drives them off either 5 minutes away for Brad and 15 minutes away for Kalen, all for a free public education. :-). They both get breakfast, with Brad getting lunch, since Kalen goes half a day. I get three hours free each day (in my head of course) because my great-niece and mother still bugs me. I still have to clean and exercise, and eat, I think.
My niece, on the other hand, goes to school when she wants to. She gets her self up for school around 6 a.m. If she goes to school, she leaves the house before I have to wake Kalen and Brad up. If I get up and she still here, she chose not to go to school or hoping someone would give her a ride over 20 minutes away, unless there is traffic. No accountability. Her mother does not wake up early to make sure she goes to school. Her aunt is not getting up an hour early either. Dealing with special needs kids is hard work. Her education. Her pending graduation.
Yesterday, after getting Kalen on the bus, I got Brad bathed and dressed. Got him downstairs. Bus arrived. Looked to the left, looked to the right, my teenager took his backpack back upstairs. Ran back upstairs quickly, got his backpack, dragged him to the bus, and off he went, in the rain.
This morning, there was no rain until two minutes before Kalen's bus arrived. The rain poured down hard. I quickly ran upstairs to get my umbrella and carried Midget to the bus. By the time, Brad's bus arrived, the rain stopped.
Today, I slept for 2 hours, where I had a wonderful dream, I forgot to get Kalen off the bus. .Woke up quick, tossed on a dress, and ran downstairs 10 minutes before Midget's bus arrived at 11:30.
So to conclude, On Rain, On snow, On Sleet, on Hail, if the bus is a-running, to school, my kids are a-going. LOL

Mountasia Houston Review (US Family Guide)
This post is sponsored by US Family Guide bloggers program. I received 4 play passes in exchange for honest review.
The family and I went to Mountasia Houston yesterday. I was not sure what to expect, since I never been before. After taking forever to pick up my nephew from his mother's job, we finally headed out, toll road and all to Mountasia.
The car was packed with my mother, niece, great-niece, sons, and nephew.
Mountasia had bumper boats, go-karts, arcade, mini-golf, and of course food.
The first thing, which stood out, was the layout. The food station was between the arcade and the tables. As soon as we walked in, we had to curve around the people, waiting for food, to walk around. The area was congested. Between people trying to find a seat to waiting for food to the arcade. My son had to look for a seat. He took a seat from a birthday party first, before my niece found him another one.
We ended up back in line to eat. The kitchen was backed up but the food was made fresh. I loved the potato patch fries (cheese and bacon covered fries). I loved the regular fries. Then, one of the staff, brought out funnel cake. I have not had funnel cake since working for Aramark in 2006. The funnel cake was good. Popcorn was good. Dipping dots-great way to end the trip.
The potato patch fries cost 6.99 each (I bought 2). The regular fries was around 3 bucks. Funnel cake was 3.99. Dipping dots was 3.99, I think. Popcorn was 2 something. I forgot how much drinks cost.
Then, we headed outside. My nephew got on the bumper boats. After the infamous Schlitterbahn trip, I am not getting on any water activities with Brad ever again, so we watched my nephew spin around in circles. It was hilarious.

I also watched the go-karts and mini-golf games going on. Mountasia had a big track, which curved around, over and under. Double and single carts. The staff proclaimed the rules before people started their engines. I liked how the families interacted. Mountasia also had batting cages. There was a group of teenagers, who was batting without their helmets. The area seems more self-regulated. The batting cages needs staff near by. I moved away quickly before I witnessed a concussion.
The toddlers, Brad, and I then, moved to see the arcade. Since, I was not trying to spend too much money, I cashed in 2 bucks for the arcade. The toddlers and Brad played a spider game, similar to Whack-a-mole, but with your feet. The three of them, plus myself was killing virtual spiders. Brad also played a car-racing game.
Then, the trouble began:
Brad did not want to leave the arcade. He started showing his Autistic side and his teen angst side. He was screaming and I did not want to lose my cool. I just wanted to leave the arcade with 3 kids and move back outside, where I don't have to bump into anyone. I also did not have his medication or melatonin with me, to calm him down. I was on my own.
After what seemed like 15 to 20 minutes, I finally got him to leave by drinking his drink. He didn't like that. We left the arcade. I bought some dipping dots and popcorn, and left the building--to the parking lot.
Will I go back again? I am not sure but not with my kids.
The family and I went to Mountasia Houston yesterday. I was not sure what to expect, since I never been before. After taking forever to pick up my nephew from his mother's job, we finally headed out, toll road and all to Mountasia.

A Friday in the life of a Special Needs Parent: Picking up Brad's Meds.

Today, I had to go pick up Brad's Rispercrap and Clone (Clonindine) from the pharmacy at the clinic. I called in the prescription 4 days ago. Since the pills take 3 days to fill, I have to call before it get too low. Too low means he won't have enough meds to get through a school week. My mother drove for almost an hour to get to the psych clinic.
The last time, I called in meds, the wait was an hour. When I have to walk-in and wait, I have waited for hours. I should have known something was wrong, when the line moved too quick. I arrived at the window with ID in hand, ready to leave Third Ward or whatever part of Houston I was in. Going to the clinic isn't one of my favorite past times. An appointment takes all day. If you have to wait for meds, add a few extra hours. The pharmacist said the Clone was ready, but not the Rispercrap. I can live without the Clone: I have Melatonin as a back-up. I can't live without the Rispercrap.
First, the pharmacy said the insurance did not cover the meds. Then, they said the amount of refills had expired (still have one more left). The pharmacy just changed over to a new system. Some data had got lost. One dude, had brought his empty pill bottle to show how many refills he had left. The pharmacy lady was very nice. She called Medicaid. She called Brad's psych down the hallway and got him some Rispercrap. I was happy when Brad's name was called and I saw both of his medications in the bag.
I did strike up a conversation, with potential SPED grandparent. She suspects her grandson may have ADHD, but his mother does not want to get him tested. The grandson was two years old. The mama can get him tested through WIC but grandma said mama does not want to get WIC. Wishing Grandma the best.
I love my boys, but I hate, hate, hate phone calls home from school, asking me to come pick up Brad (with no car) for bad and destructive, Autistic behavior. He already doesn't take his Clone in the mornings, like he supposed to because his teacher said he slept the whole day(s). When he doesn't have his Rispercrap, he can kick, throw, scream, meltdown. The last, level 5 meltdown, she sent Brad to the principals office. This was about a month ago. I was at the psych clinic again, picking up Brad's medications.
By the time, we got back on our side of town, Brad had a hour left for school. My mother did not want to waste time picking him up, when he would be home soon. Special needs teachers supposed to know how to deal with special needs kids, she said. Plus, you can’t pay me to homeschool again.
Anyway, this is a Friday in the life of a special needs parent.
Other highlights of my day:
- Went to take my shower earlier today before we headed to the clinic. Kalen was sleep. When I got back to my room, Kalen was woke. Diaper was off. He smeared poo all over him, my pillows, and sheets.
- Early this morning, both Brad and Kalen woke up before 4 a.m. They did not keep quiet, which gave groggy me, a migraine. I gave Brad a Clone earlier, but he left the room quickly after. I am not sure if he took the pill. I had to give him melatonin so he can sleep for school. Brad played on the computer, while Kalen went through the bins and buckets. I had enough when Kalen hit me in the head, with a small box, filled with glassware. Yeah, not a good night. I made Brad turn off the computer and get back in his bed. I prayed for a moment's peace. Of course, I tapped Kalen's leg for trying to kill mama, while groggy. I could not handle all the madness last night.
One day, one day soon, both kids will be in school. I will have three hours free from Timon and Pumbaa. Have a blessed day.
