Educational Alphabet Flash Cards

I reviewed Educational Alphabet Flash Cards for review from Tomoson. The cards are sold by Educational Toys Planet. The set of cards is sold in the ABC Toys section and intended for kids, 3 years and up.

I chose the cards for my oldest. He is 12, autistic, and adhd. I have purchased cards by School Zone before (the people, who created the cards) from a few different stores. The price on Educational Toys Planet is comparable to other places.

Each card is represented by a picture and a letter. My technique for teaching my son came from his speech therapy teachers. Show him a card, say the letter, then say the word. See if he will imitate the letter, the word, or sounds similar to the letter or the word.

The deck also has extras. For example, there is a card included from the Golden Scholar Club, where you can redeem it online for a free book. Another card has ideas for games, you can play with the cards. For example, the alphabetical order game, where your child tries to place a set of A to Z in Alphabetical order. Finally, there are three cards, with mini pictures of all the letters with matching pictures.

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

Hugo the Happy Starfish Book Reviews (Tomoson)

I read Hugo the Happy Starfish: the secret to happiness and Hugo the Happy Starfish: the last bully in exchange for review from Tomoson.  I received hardback books. The books were written by Suzy Liebermann.

I have read Hugo's books before on Amazon. I loved the Secret to Happiness; The Island of Optimism, and the Joy of Nothing. I also bought the Island of Enthusiasm, Maps (not a Hugo book, but a great Liebermann book). Other non-Hugo books I have are Transportation, Role Models, The School, Commit to be Fit, Cinderella, Recycling, and The Earth. The books are educational and fun to read. The books also teach kids about important topics such as bullying and sharing.

Hugo the happy starfish: The last bully

Hugo is a happy starfish, with a big heart. While, swimming along through the ocean, Hugo notices a friend getting bullied. Hugo steps in for his friend and also starts an anti-bullying club. Hugo wanted to stop all sea creatures from being bullied. Hugo maintained a positive attitude throughout the book. He did not resort to attacking or insulting others. The book was a great lesson in character development. The book was a quick read. It also used easy-to-understand language. The books was not too short, but not too long to lose a child's interest. I enjoyed reading the book.

Hugo the happy starfish: the secret to happiness

Hugo is sad and looks for ways to be happy. He tries fishing  and treasure hunting, but feels sad immediately after. He learns that happiness comes from within, in addition to making new friends, sharing, and helping friends. Children can learn about empathy, social responsibility, and empowerment through giving and sharing.

The Secret to Happiness is also an award winning children's book. It was an award winning finalist in the Children's Mind/Body/Spirit category of the USA Best books of 2012, sponsored by USA Book News. Once again, I enjoyed reading this book. The book was also colorful and alive. The story was just long enough to capture my children's attention, which I loved. This is a great book to read.

About the books:

  • Teaches character development
  • Each book offers themed vocabulary to introduce Spanish.
  • Each book also comes with worksheets to download on the website.
  • The books are available in seven languages

Look Twice Book Review (Tomoson)

I read Look Twice, in exchange for review from Tomoson. The book was written by m. garzon and published by Petal Press. This is a sequel to Blaze of Glory. I received a Kindle Edition.

I did not read the first book and now wish  I did. I did buy the first book in 2012. Now I have incentive to read it.  The first few pages listed a lot of characters and I wasn't sure how they was connected. Was very overwhelming. I love to read, so I was not going to let not having the first book stop me from reading the second.

Other than that:

The book is about Tea or Taya. Tea has a brother named Seth. Tea is dating Jaden. The relationship does have drama and controversy. Their relationship isn't the most appropriate, but Tea and Jaden want to make their relationship work. There is something going on and everyone is trying to meet to discuss it.

The book was written well and the scenes moved quickly in the beginning.

One minor issue, I had was there was some small print scattered throughout the book.  I had to enlarge the pages so I can read it.

Vocabulary Made Easy Book Review

I read Vocabulary Made Easy, in exchange for review from Homeschool.com. I got the book for free on Amazon on a Kindle Free Day. The book was written by Pat Wyman.

I took my time reading this book because I wanted to absorb the information. I would love for Brad to learn new words, despite his disabililty.

The first thing, which stood out, was the author provided links for three more free books on math, reading, and spelling.

Vocabulary made easy focuses on word association and pictures, which is what Brad's speech therapists use with him. Brad will recognize the picture and know the words more, than seeing a word and recognizing it. The book also talks about using visual, kinesthetic, and auditory learning styles. The author recommends taking a learning style quiz on How to Learn before reading the book. From experience, I know Brad is more visual, while Kalen is kinesthetic (touch and feeling, movement). I also took the quiz for myself:

Learning Styles Preferences for Stacie D Wyatt

47% Visual

32% Auditory

21% Kinesthetic

Visual Learners

If your highest percentage is visual, you prefer to think in pictures or movies. This style is most effective when you want to create and recall images when you read, or when you are taking a written test.
School caters to highly visual learners because they make images when taking written tests, and can retrieve the information they learned much faster. The old adage, "one picture is worth a thousand words" is true for visual learners. Visual learners tend to be neat and organized and their learning style preference tends to most closely match most educational and company working environments.

Auditory Learners

If your highest preference is auditory, you prefer to learn by listening and often recall the words you've heard in your mind. If you are taking a written test, this tends to slow you down because you are speaking to yourself as you read.

Kinesthetic Learners

If your highest preference is kinesthetic, you prefer to be a hands-on learner and most likely love to move around frequently, like athletics, and to build things with your hands. Be grateful for your talents and also, it is important to know that most company and school environments cater to people whose highest learning style preference is visual.
The book also focuses on word association. If your children associate a word to a word or a word to a picture, it increases learning. For example, Romeo is associated to Juliet, or a song may help remember a memory. For example, I had an incident, which happened in 2001 and TLC's unpretty was playing in the background. I now associate that memory to TLC's song. You also can associate words to sounds. Another technique is to play music, while teaching your kids new words.

Anyway, the book teaches kids to learn one new word at a time, versus learning multiple words. Writing down 20 or so words and learning the meanings is not always effective either.

This was a great book. I would love to know if the techniques can be modified to special needs kids, more so, on Brad and Kalen's level. I definitely will try the index cards. I have been cutting up some of Brad's old home school vocabulary and making flash cards from the spelling sheets. Trying to match up the pictures to the words. Been a slow process though since I have a lot of work to cut up.

ArtTextry Review

I reviewed ArtTextry, in response to a post on Bloggerdise. I chose the Now poster. My wonderful kids decided to open up my mail for me. Lesson learned: when getting mail, any mail, put it up right away, especially if it comes in a big box or a canvas roll.

I saw an ad on Bloggerdise to review an art website. I love art. I love art on my walls. I don't like blank, plain white walls, such as the ones in my house. The Now Poster is 19.99. You also can save 30% with a coupon. The coupon is available on the website and posted on the blog. Coupon lasts until August 19, 2013

What the poster says:
Now
and it dawned on me that there is nothing but life
the life of the living--the life of the now
and the soon will now come to pass
memories of yesterday, dreams of tomorrow
today as life "is"now

but the nows come and then
they pass. As life shifts from time to time.
from now to now
A ways in the now

What are some ways your family reduces boredom?

Brad and Kalen both like to be tickled. Brad also likes watching youtube videos and movies. Kalen just likes to climb on top of stuff and knock stuff over. We do need to get out the house more. So far, we go to church, dr. appts, and the store. We may go to the zoo, once per year for the walk for autism by Easter Seals. I am also planning another trip to Morgan's Wonderland in San Antonio in August or September. We went last year, it was fun. Morgan's wonderland is the world's only special needs park, located in San Antonio. Best part, special needs kids and adults are free for life. The kids went in December, 2012 and had a good time. The next time, I go,  I am getting a hotel room. We did not get back to Houston until midnight. It also did not help Brad had to go potty on the bus. I did not know the area, so I said we will go potty on the Mega bus, once we get back to the parking lot. I can't miss the bus home, especially since I didn't have money to reschedule. Brad decided to attempt to pull down his pants and try to take off his pull-up a few times on the public transportation bus. So, I said the next time, we are getting a room for the night, so Brad can freshen up. Somewhere on the same route from Mega Bus's stop and the park.

Noxicare Vitamin B-12 500 mcg Tablets Product Review from Tomoson

I reviewed Noxicare Vitamin B-12 500 mcg tablets for Tomoson. I chose this product because I recently read B-12 can increase energy, and I need a lot of energy. My mother also bought some B-12 a few days before my bottle came in the mail.

Overwhelmed

Sometimes I feel overwhelmed--between the blog and the kids and life itself. Sometimes I feel like I put too much on my self, thinking I can do it, when sometimes I can not (which is why I write everything down now in a document, either on paper or on google drive).

Today, has been one of those days. I did a book blast, which freed me from posting on the blog, but I still had work to do behind the scenes. The kids acted extra today. Brad tried to break my door again because I took the remote from him because he kept messing with his brother. The hole behind my door has gotten a little bigger. My door is also cracked at the top, thanks to another meltdown.

I also tried to get him to try some tea for review. He did not want to try it. Luckily, he is sleep now. Last nite, even with 6 mls of melatonin in his system, Brad did not want to go to sleep. He fell asleep around 5 or 6 am. I know because I was woke as well. He also takes clonindine. I cant find my pill crusher (need an assistant to help me sort my things). Getting him to swallow a pill is ridiculous. You have to put the pill in his mouth, close it. add water, close the mouth, and make him swallow. otherwise, he will spit the pill out and I have to start over.

I am also getting tired of him peeing in my bed. He broke his bed months ago. I am trying to find a good one for him. Something an Autistic, ADHD, child can not break. He had a futon, but broke the frame. Ordered new screws and he still broke the frame. The frame is fine now, but now in the game room. The mattress on the other hand, Brad peed through it. Opened it up, it was blue jean material. His urine disintegrated it. So, eventually, he works his way back into my bed. I got waterproof mattress pads and covers, plus regular ones, and he still finds a way to pee in my bed. Last night, since he refused to sleep, I made him go potty every 30 or so minutes. My bed was dry in the morning. Yay. I washed my bedding two extra times, two days ago, because Brad kept peeing. Not sure, if he senses he is wet or stinky or wants to lay in his own urine. Sometimes, he will tell me if he is stinky. Sometimes he goes to the potty and pee. Yay me.

Kalen, though he can't walk, can climb into stuff and throw it out, pour it out, eat it up, or put it in his mouth. My poor toothbrush, he found in my purse and decided he wanted to use it. Good job, but use your own toothbrush lol. He knocked over books, paper, and bags. I had to get rid of my mini bookcase, because Kalen keeps knocking everything over. I gave it to my niece. I need something taller and more sturdier. The book case was left with nothing but my Carnival Plastic Ship on a stick and the phone books.

I also need my laptop fixed. Tired of Brad's desktop. Good for doing work, but I miss Microsoft office. I also can't find the book i am working on. I know i saved a back-up copy, but it is not on Google Drive. Could be on a flash drive, but not sure which one. I have gotten quotes, but they all was high--for a simple consultation.

Spring Surprise Book Blast

BLURB:

Sara Michaels is single again. And she’s celebrating her thirtieth birthday with a complete spa makeover and a day of boutique shopping with her two best friends. After a ten-month battle for freedom, a long weekend in Nashville, Tennessee is just what she needs to erase the memories of a broken heart. Jack Tanner is the soon-to-be new partner at Chester & Dorsey Development Firm. Jack’s love life has been on the back burner for years as he’s built a successful career. But the moment he meets Sara, he takes a hard look at his life and his priorities. Sara steps out of her comfort zone and spends an unforgettable weekend with Jack. She’s never felt so carefree. Until she realizes too late that three days can change everything.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
Jack was leaning against a post, about halfway between the barn and the porch, when he saw Sara come out of the house. God, she was gorgeous. Every inch of his body stirred as he watched her approach him in a pair of form-fitting black jeans. She had her hair down and wore a long necklace that hung low on her neck, bringing his eyes to the low cut of her shimmery blue blouse. If that wasn’t enough to make his blood boil, she was wearing a pair of high-heeled black sandals that showed off her sexy red toenails he’d noticed the previous night. He felt like a teenager going on his first date. He didn’t know what to say. You’re pretty didn’t seem to do justice, but he hated to be the slobbering fool, constantly telling her how beautiful or amazing she looked. Even though she did. He wished their situation wasn’t so complicated. He was getting ready to make a huge move in his professional life that would take him farther away from her. How could life be so cruel, to introduce him to such an amazing woman, the kind he could really see himself falling for, just to say that he couldn’t have her?
Or maybe life wasn’t saying he couldn’t have her. Maybe long distance was just temporary. Maybe . .
About the author:
My husband and I live in the suburbs of Nashville, Tennessee with our eighteen-year-old son and three dogs. When I’m not working or writing, I can be found with family and friends. I love to bake in the winter, grill in the summer, and on occasion, I sneak away from everyone and curl up with a good book. I hope you enjoy my stories. Each one touches on modern day issues, fears, and challenges that women face every day. And each one illustrates that love is within reach if you let down those walls and allow your heart to open. Our lives and experiences are so much more meaningful when we have someone to share them with.
2) Schlitterbahn has been the birthplace of nearly every waterpark ride innovation including the world’s first uphill water coaster and the inland surfing ride, the Boogie Bahn.
3) Every park has a claim to fame:
  • New Braunfels: World’s longest tube ride; America’s Favorite Waterpark
  • South Padre: World’s first Transportainment system where interconnected rivers are queue lines for rides.
  • Galveston: World’s favorite indoor park
  • Kansas City: Midwest’s longest tubing adventure
Green Facts about the SchlitterBahn
Loblolly Pines: In 2011 a major wildfire raged through Bastrop County, Texas in September. Three separate fires started during Labor Day weekend and by the time it was controlled, it destroyed 1,691 homes and burned over 34,000 acres of land including the vast majority of Bastrop State Park’s 5,900 acres of Loblolly pines. The Lost Pines Forest, thought to have originated in or before the Pleistocene era, was also heavily impacted.
For safety, the burned pines had to be removed. These scorched trees were destined for the grinder who would have turned them into mulch. Jeff Henry with Schlitterbahn offered to take the felled trees, then had them milled, beginning the process of transforming the pines from scorched wood to the most dramatic feature throughout the Schlitterbahn Beach Resort at South Padre.
Here’s where you’ll find the Bastrop Pines in the resort:
  • Rooms: In most rooms the cabinets, coffee tables, nightstands, and headboards are made from the Bastrop Loblolly pines.
  • Dining areas: Large tables are made from the Loblolly pines.
  • Lobby: The large tree stump tables by the doors leading to the heated pool are from the fire, as is the siding along many of the interior walls
  • External: The siding on the outside walls of the resort are made from Loblolly pine.
  • Ropes: Over three miles of 3-inch mooring ropes of dozens of former ships have been painstakingly wrapped around giant concrete structural poles in our Sea 4ever 10,000 square foot patio.
  • Green House: The retractable roof over our indoor waterpark was built from a large greenhouse – an old Schultz nursery.
  • Lobby Check in Counter: Built from salvaged walnut trees which were pulled from a road project in Kansas.
  • Parapet Walls: The hatch covers came off a famous US Troop carrier the John E. Pope and are used on parapet walls and also to make tables. Over 500 are on site.
  • Chandeliers: The beautiful chandeliers hanging in the Sea 4ever event patio were salvaged from an ageing Vegas hotel. Our team glued shells to them and hung in the ceiling.
  • Waterslides: Yes, even some of the water slides were recycled. The water slides came from a park in Cleveland Ohio, were salvaged, refurbished, and re-installed.
  • Handrails: An old Dutchman Downs Stadium was the source for all the handrails.
Easy Canvas Prints
I reviewed Easy Canvas Prints, in exchange for honest review. I received an 11 X 14 print. I chose a photo collage I created with CollageItPro. I chose this pic because it has plenty of pics of my kids, in action. I don't have too many pics of the kids and I together because it is either brad only, kalen only, brad and kalen, myself and kalen, myself and brad. I knew the pic would come out dark in some spots because of the webcam photos, but it still was a beautiful canvas.
About the company:
Facebook Page
The company offers canvas prints, with different sizes, wraps, and frames. You also can choose a custom size. You chose the photo for the canvas, whether a photo, digital art, or a landscape. If you have art on Instagram or Facebook, you can choose that too.  You also can choose borders and enhancements.
Some enhancements include:
  1. Black and White or Sepia Pictures
