Excerpt

Suddenly, I’m standing in a field, illuminated by sunlight, but I'm not burning. It's warm andrelaxing. I look down to the translucent skin of my hands and can see the blood coursing

through my veins. I turn my hand over, staring at it.

A movement catches my eye and I look up. Before me is a beautiful woman with dark hair and

clear eyes. At first, her gaze is loving, adoring almost, and then it fades into a bone-chilling

shriek as she turns to run away in horror. I try to reassure her that it’s okay, but the words get

stuck in my throat. Her skin burns and flakes away, and before I know it, her scream fades to a

muffled shriek, abruptly cut off as she becomes a pile of ash. A maniacal laugh sounds beside

me, and I turn to see a dark-headed man with a deviant grin.

Wasn't that lovely? he asks me, laughing right as I feel my skin start to burn.

About the Author

After working in the legal and technical fields for many years, Jennifer Osborn took the plunge

AUDITION FOR MURDER Excerpt

New York City, late 1960’s. 

Nick O’Connor put down the telephone, his broad, muscular body sagging a little. So she hadn’t been merely tired. Hell. He changed to worn jeans and his old leather jacket, and made a mean face at the mirror. Nick the hustler tonight. Man of a thousand faces, said his agent, and every one of them homely.

A regular one-man Dickens novel. Nick headed The snow was not sticking much. It made the sidewalks shine darkly, splashed with gold and rose and white reflections from bars and street lamps, and pasted down scraps of paper that otherwise would be scuttling across the streets in the bitter wind. His way led past whores, pushers, tired old men huddled over warm grates. Without a hurt, the heart is hollow. No hollow hearts on this street.

Franklin’s place was halfway down the block. A worn brass door handle, chipped paint. Nick wiped a few snowflakes from his thinning hair and pushed through the crowd to the end of the bar. In a moment the bartender, black, with a trim mustache, had worked 

“Hey, man, where ya been?”

“Is she here, Franklin?”

“Been here for hours.”

“Yeah, I was working tonight. I just heard.”

“She said she got fired.”

“Hey, we can’t all be self-employed minority success stories.”

Franklin chuckled. “You watch your honky mouth.” He went off to break up a loud argument about whether or not the Vietcong were winning, served a whisky, and returned to Nick. “Room 6B,” he said.

Which mythological creature are you most like?

In Greek mythology I identify most with Athena, who loves civilization and community, and is known for creativity too. She was willing to fight for her city, Athens, but wept for the fallen, strong but sad. I like the stories involving Greek gods because, despite their immortality and power, they have failings, and have to deal with each other as well as with human conflicts.

Also, the stories are myths, which come to us already told in many versions.. So if a god or goddess does something questionable, maybe the next retelling will explain it better. For example, I was always uncomfortable with the end of Aeschylus’s Oresteia, where Athena ends things neatly by judging in favor of Orestes and against the Furies who are torturing him because he killed his mother. In the Aeschylus play, Athena gets the Furies to surrender happily by promising them honor as Euminedes (gracious ones).

Okay, it’s good for civilization to get this settled, to end the multigenerational chain of avenging murders. But the Furies were right too–– the guy had killed his mother! So I was pleased to see Mnouchkine’s production of the play. Her retelling showed that civilization hadn’t totally won, that the Furies retreated because Athena was stronger, but instead of becoming “gracious ones” they still snarled in the shadows, ready to emerge again next time there was a horrible murder. And there would definitely be another, and Athena, strong but sad, knew it too.. .

Excerpt One:

Charlie Papageorgiou's alarm blared just after five a.m. Never a morning person, he struggled to get used to the early starts. Still half asleep and after an overdue visit to the toilet, Charlie walked outside his room for some fresh desert air.

Off toward the distant east, the sun had started to make its way into the horizon, intruding in on the darkness of the night. The chill from the desert night air was quick to warm to the first signs of the rising sun.

Charlie gazed across the massive dry landscape. Today, the knots in his stomach were a little more bearable than they had been in recent times. Charlie continued to pan his sights beyond the factory where there was nothing much but an uninterrupted flat of desert sand.

Off towards the horizon, the earth's floor and distant sky would seem to meet with a picturesque beauty that would remain blurred, thanks to the shimmering heat reflecting itself back up from the desert floor.
For the briefest of moments, Charlie stopped to watch the typical panoramic landscape with it's out of focus horizon.

"Another hot one," he mumbled to himself. Charlie walked a little path which led out to an open area of the working camp. From there, he could stretch out while gaining a much clearer panoramic view of the campsite. The morning ritual would normally help him get motivated for the day ahead, but in recent times, this was becoming increasingly difficult.

Directly in front of him but still a little distance away, were all the portable working offices. These
transportable buildings sat in the middle of nowhere, safely located well away from anything else in the plant. There were close to fifty storage offices, some big and some small, but all clumped together like an army barracks facility.

Access from these offices to the production facility was best done by bicycle or motorized vehicle, both of which were readily available. Charlie turned to look directly back at his room. The camp's sleeping quarters were nothing more than a small bathroom, single bedroom and a radio and study desk for company.

Charlie staggered back into his room. Last night's sleep had not been good to him. The bland furnishings and the confinement of a work camp bedroom had begun to take their toll on Charlie's morale.

He walked towards his room and stopped. There he stood in the doorway. He sighed heavily as he looked at his orange overalls. They were scrunched up and piled into one corner of the study desk, having been tossed there from the night before. Most employees came and went as per their two-week rotations. These employees were paid well for their troubles.

However, Charlie had been motivated by the money and was being paid extreme amounts to live onsite at the production plant. Only a select few worked permanently on the production site. Running late, Charlie dragged himself into the shower. It would have to be brief if he also wanted to visit the canteen for a quick breakfast before starting work.

How long have you been writing?

It took me two years to write The Life List and another two to get up the courage to publish it.
The moment I left a bar with a guy six years younger than me...when I was a seemingly happy married woman, I knew I had a big story to tell.  Well, the story became HUGE when that chance encounter led to massive amounts of lies, desperate and gross manipulation, and shockingly, the kind of love I never knew existed. 

I was a good girl—a girl who created a detailed life list at the age of sixteen and I diligently stuck to it.  I worked my ass off to achieve all of the things I thought I wanted in life and by twenty-eight…I almost had it all.  But then that chance encounter at the bar made me question the life list and all that I had accomplished.  In one night my entire world was turned upside down.

My story is based on my life and it examines the sanity of blindly following the bucket list we make when we are young and the impact of changing our minds after we have checked most things off the list.  It’s a dilemma that millions of married women face every day.  There are so many women who are torn between choosing love and obligation. I know their struggle…I know their heartache.

How many other books have you published?

The Life List is book I of The List Trilogy.  Book II, The Unexpected List, was released last March. The last book in the series, The Hope List, is set for release next March.  The books in the series that have been released sit tight at an average Amazon rating of 4.8.  I’m pretty happy!
What motivated you to write "The Life List"

Women of all kinds–twenty-somethings, housewives and superwomen wanna-bes–will all be able to relate to the same pressures I felt of constructing the ideal life, only to fall short.  I suspect there will be a lot of exhaling going on as those women read The Life List.  All of them were my motivation.

I certainly don’t expect everyone to agree with my decisions, but all will pause as they follow along on my journey to ask, “What would I do if I were her?”

Is the main character based on your life experiences?

Although I can’t give you an exact ratio of what’s real and what’s fiction, I can tell you that this book is based on my true story. But I suppose, if my life depended on it and I had to come up with a ratio, I’d go 90% real life, 10% embellishment. What’s sort of funny (or tragic, depending on how you look at it) is that people think the real stuff is fictitious and the fictitious stuff is real.  I really did do and say some pretty outrageous things in my attempt to find happiness, and it still blows my mind at how disturbing and chaotic my life was for a while.  You can all breathe a sigh of relief, though, because I am in love and happily married to one of the two men in the novel.  Can’t tell ya if it’s Kurt or Leo because that would just ruin the entire List Trilogy and that would be plain ‘ol mean. 

Do you keep a life list? yes or no

Not anymore because what makes us happy is ever-changing and that right there is the problem with making life lists!  By the time you cross off the last item you’re like, “Damn, I don’t want all of that shit anymore!  None of it means anything to me because I’m a different person than I was 5, 10…15 years ago!”  I say stick to only making grocery lists…can’t get hurt or let down with thoseJ

I’m having two launch parties “Afternoon Tea At Bloxington Manor”. The first is online on the 28^th February on Facebook and the second is LIVE at the English stately home that inspired the home of my hero on Sunday 2^nd March.  A local favourite venue for me, Avington Park in Hampshire is steeped in history and tradition. (Think genuine Palladian style rather than Downton Abbey neo-Jacobean).
