10 days without by Daniel Day Book Review (Blogging for Books)

I read Ten Days Without: Daring Adventures in Discomfort That Will Change Your World and You, in exchange for honest review from Blogging for Books. I received a paperback version of the book. The book was written by Daniel Ryan Day.

I wanted to review the book because the description sounded Amazon. Day went 10 days without a particular item to raise money for different organizations. For 10 days, he went without shoes. For another 10 days, he went without speaking. 10 days without a coat, without furniture, without legs.


The book made me think about what could I give up for 10 days. I can't give up my phone, even though I rarely make calls because I have kids. Can't give up parts of social media because I am a blogger and student. Can't give up internet because I am a student.

I can go 10 days without sweets. without snacks. without a coat. without going out to eat or ordering delivery.  without sex (since I been celibate for over 3 years). maybe I can try to go 10 days without arguing or fussing or getting angry at my kids.

I think the book teaches people about gratitude. People are suffering everyday and would be grateful for the simple things, such as a coat or a pair of shoes. Day used going without to help others in need.

The book was a great read. Definitely adding this to my re-read pile.

The ups and downs of hand-me downs

I love a good hand-me down, whether for me or the kids. Clothes, shoes, furniture, books, etc. Every few months I go through and give away some of my stuff, usually using Craigslist. I am currently waiting on someone to come pick up 7 boxes of books, magazines, newspapers, and clothes. It also includes 2 full bags of clothes. No sense in throwing away something, someone else can use, if it is in decent, good, or great condition.

My mother, on the other hand, will buy used furniture and appliances, but not used clothing. She will accept it, but not wear it. The neighbor has donated plenty of clothing, shoes, purses, and furniture over the years to my mother. I have gotten new clothes, shoes, and purses, out of the deal. Yet, why accept the things, if you don't want to wear it or use it? What if I was not here (or anyone, who will wear it). Sometimes she can be too high-maintenance.

The last few times, I gave stuff away, my mother has told me no one wants all the junk. I don't give away holey or bad clothing. and the magazines and newspapers can be used for crafts. The books can be read. I only read fiction books usually once. No point in keeping them around when I am not going to use them again. Toss in a few multiple copies of books, I won and obtained on various sites. I don't need 10 copies of one book.

I went downstairs earlier today. My mother was going through some shoes to throw away in the garbage. I went through the shoes to make sure none of them are mine, and found some good, great, and decent matches in a size 10. Instead of throwing them away, she can give the good ones to church, a homeless shelter, a senior center, or anyone, which can use them.

I am not the nicest person in the world, but I do have a slight, compassionate, giving side. People help me and I help people. For example, before I got pregnant in 2010, I lost some weight. I went from a size 16 to a size 8. 130 lbs. I did not have money to buy size 8 and 10s right away. I was still wearing my old sizes. Someone at work, brought me a big bag of size 8's and 10's. Or after Kalen was born, Brad's old bus driver brought the baby a few big bags of baby clothes. I kept the clothes, which would fit immediately and some for when he grew, but I gave the rest away to the church. anyway, have a nice day

Hugo the Happy Starfish Book Reviews (Tomoson)

I read Hugo the Happy Starfish: the secret to happiness and Hugo the Happy Starfish: the last bully in exchange for review from Tomoson.  I received hardback books. The books were written by Suzy Liebermann.

I have read Hugo's books before on Amazon. I loved the Secret to Happiness; The Island of Optimism, and the Joy of Nothing. I also bought the Island of Enthusiasm, Maps (not a Hugo book, but a great Liebermann book). Other non-Hugo books I have are Transportation, Role Models, The School, Commit to be Fit, Cinderella, Recycling, and The Earth. The books are educational and fun to read. The books also teach kids about important topics such as bullying and sharing.

Hugo the happy starfish: The last bully

Hugo is a happy starfish, with a big heart. While, swimming along through the ocean, Hugo notices a friend getting bullied. Hugo steps in for his friend and also starts an anti-bullying club. Hugo wanted to stop all sea creatures from being bullied. Hugo maintained a positive attitude throughout the book. He did not resort to attacking or insulting others. The book was a great lesson in character development. The book was a quick read. It also used easy-to-understand language. The books was not too short, but not too long to lose a child's interest. I enjoyed reading the book.

Hugo the happy starfish: the secret to happiness


Hugo is sad and looks for ways to be happy. He tries fishing  and treasure hunting, but feels sad immediately after. He learns that happiness comes from within, in addition to making new friends, sharing, and helping friends. Children can learn about empathy, social responsibility, and empowerment through giving and sharing.

The Secret to Happiness is also an award winning children's book. It was an award winning finalist in the Children's Mind/Body/Spirit category of the USA Best books of 2012, sponsored by USA Book News. Once again, I enjoyed reading this book. The book was also colorful and alive. The story was just long enough to capture my children's attention, which I loved. This is a great book to read.
