Minus 1: The Drew Smith Series Book Review

I read Minus 1by Norwood Holland, in exchange for review from Write Now Virtual Book Tours.

About the Book:

Minus One the Drew Smith Series prequel takes us back when the attorney launches his legal career. Before the ink is dry on his license to practice law Drew Smith finds himself at the center of a murder mystery. The recent law school graduate works as a hotel concierge and befriends two bellmen an Arab and a Latino, Medhat and Julio. Like the three musketeers they bond in a fraternal friendship put to the test when Medhat is kidnapped after running up a drug tab he can't pay. Rescued by Drew and Julio, Medhat then becomes the prime suspect in a string of murders. Driven by their romantic entanglements the attorney is captivated with a pretty Latina whose father objects to her dating a Black man. Julio and his Filipina love find themselves expecting, and Medhat’s passion for blondes gets him snared in a femme fatale's net. Minus One captures Drew Smith's evolution from youthful indiscretion to a professional burdened with seriousness of purpose.

My Review:
The book starts off with suspense. Two officers are called by an elderly female to check on her neighbor, Carol. She heard a disturbance but did not want to enter Carol's apartment (she had a key) without a police escort. While the officers was investigating the scene, a mysterious man (Medhat) enters the apartment. Anyway,  The elderly neighbor knew Medhat, but the police did not. The book is set in the 1980's. The prologue was nice. loved the description, the scenery, and the characters. Great start to a book.

Medhat is a Christian, Part Egyptian, Part Martinican, but born in America.  Medhat has charisma, charm, persuasion, and he loves women--which is what got him into the bulk of his trouble in the book. Medhat is living a hedonistic lifestyle. Medhat also does coke. Medhat is close with Drew and a Latino named Julio.

Julio is a Nicaraguan, former gang member, and had 5 brothers and sisters. His father died in an construction accident. Julio did not graduate from high school. Julio is dating an Asian, named Chevy.

Drew Smith enters the book, starting with chapter one. He is called to help Medhat get out of jail for potential involvement in the prologue. Drew is more serious than Julio and Medhat.  It also seems everyone's lives revolves around Medhat, then toss in a juicy sex scene, which I was not expecting. Have not read a sex scene in a book in a long time.

Drew has only known Julio and Medhat for a few months. The three friends met when Drew worked as a concierge at a hotel, while Julio and Medhat were bellhops. Drew had just completed law school, but not obtained his results from the bar exam yet. Drew is dating a Latina named Nina. He does obtain his results around Chapter 10 or 11 of the book.

Carol enters the book in chapter 3. Not much is given about her at first, except she is a blonde and she is a friend of Julio's at first. She has a jealous boyfriend, Fast Eddie. She meets Medhat at the club. They danced. He followed her into the bathroom, won her over with his charm, and got her number. Then, a fight ensues. Great fight.

You also have Lauren, a drug-dealer, crack-user, and loves to have sex. She works for Fast Eddie and Medhat owes Eddie money. Next, Johnny Black is Eddie's right hand man.

The book is fast-paced. From the time, Drew, Medhat, and Julio agreed to club after work, to a fight, to sharing a woman sexually, etc. Medhat and Julio began integrating themselves into Drew's life. Taking over is more like it (Drew's house, bed, car, clothes, space).

The book overall is very descriptive. The scenes will pull you in. The characters and plot are well-written. Norwood did a good job with this book.

Homemade buggy (roach) powder

I found this recipe online last year. I was looking for a natural bug killer solution, with ingredients, I already had at home. The ingredients was powdered sugar and baking powder. I also done the recipe with baking soda. still kill roaches dead. Basically, the sugar attracts the bugs and the soda causes their bellies to explode. The ingredients are cheap (1.00 or less).

You add together equal parts sugar and powder, then mix. I did 1/3 baking powder and 1/3 powdered sugar. I use a measuring cup to add both ingredients and then mix in the measuring cup, as well. Then, sprinkle in the areas, where you see Mr. and Mrs. Roach and their annoying little children. The process is slow acting but it works. Plus, since it is natural and edible, it won't harm the kiddies, if they accidently touch it.

Financial Self Defense Book Review

I read Financial Self-Defense Program by Steve Kanney, in exchange for review from Tomoson. The book is currently .99 on Kindle and free to borrow from Prime. The book also can be downloaded here.

My review:

I chose this book because I need to learn more about saving and managing money. I have a basic savings account, but I do not do regular deposits. I also am taking a course at church on managing money God's way. Next, I do have a budget, but can do more as far as investments to save for the future.

The book teaches people how to safely manage their money and achieve financial objectives. The process is not easy. People need to take a hard look at money coming in and money going out. The first step is to create a financial plan, which requires planning and preparation. You also need to determine your short-term objectives, long-term objectives, and any future investments.

Short-term objectives include cash reserves, insurance (home, health, renters, life), capacity to borrow, and liquid investments. Other things to consider:

  • Do you know your credit score?
  • Can you withdraw against lines retirement accounts, in times of emergency?
  • Can you liquid investments be sold with minimal costs?
  • Do you track your spending? Do you have a budget?

Long-term objectives include college, retirement, and pensions.

The book also discusses areas, where you should not spend your time. These areas include:

  • Picking actively managed funds to beat the market
  • Using insurance for tax-deferred investment (variable annuities).
  • Picking individual stocks

The book also contains links to websites like Social Security and articles on managing finances. Next, the book provides information and links to financial models such as Discretionary wealth, asset allocation, and Tipster. Then, the book discusses financial advisors, types of investments, consumption, monitoring performance, and provides a resources page. Finally, the book discusses excess funds and what to do with them. For example, you can donate to charity, invest the money, or plan your estate.

Author Bio: (Copied from Amazon)

In order to achieve both financial health and happiness, we need to seek advice from someone trained in both. Martial arts training is an optimal way to learn how to engage in an activity in the most effective manner while still enjoying life to its fullest. According to the martial approach, one needs philosophical understanding as well as technical abilities. Steve Kanney, CFA began the study of martial arts in 1972 and Aikido in 1978. He further studied the philosophical aspects of the martial arts through meditation training, particularly Zen, beginning in 1996. The connection between Zen and Japanese martial traditions is quite extensive. He opened Scarsdale Aikido in 2003 for the purpose of teaching both the philosophy and the art and currently continues as the chief instructor.

Many problems/concerns in the financial arena have been well-resolved in the institutional marketplace, but not addressed with individuals. Steve Kanney, CFA simultaneously pursued a career in the institutional financial markets beginning with a Bachelors Degree in Finance from Emory University in 1983. He completed a CFA in 1993. He worked in institutional fixed income sales based upon asset/liability matching analysis from 1984 up until 2000, 11 years of which was at the infamous Lehman Brothers. Recognizing the long trend of decline in the ethical conduct in the brokerage segment of the financial industry, he left Lehman and began work at a hedge fund as a risk manager in 2001. He also developed some statistically-based trading strategies for the interest rate markets during that period. In late 2003 he began a martial arts school, Scarsdale Aikido. He left his formal occupation in finance at the end of that year. He managed assets privately (without fees) for individual investors from 2004 onwards.

He has a unique background for bridging the gap between the strategy of martial arts and the incremental analysis of finance. As the chief instructor of a Scarsdale Aikido he teaches the philosophy both through physical movements and discussion on a daily basis. He also worked extensively with the complex nature of the financial decision-making matrix advising multi-billion dollar banks, investment advisers and to a lesser degree insurance companies for many years. As the skills and discipline of institutional finance continue to trickle down to the individual investors through improved technology, his skills are particularly cogent. Combining the philosophy of martial arts with the technical knowledge of finance can help anyone, regardless of their financial status, find a greater sense of purpose in life and express it with a more precise financial acumen.

For more information see http://www.integratedfinancialny.com for finance and http://www.scarsdaleaikido.com for martial arts background.

The ambush

The ambush

scheduled brad's speech therapies back to back today. Did it different this time. Online first, then in-person. Brad sat still for 20 minutes during Shannon's session, which was good. She also did a straight session--no video breaks to get his attention. Door bell rung. Jose came early. 10 minutes. I went back upstairs to finish with Shannon. Brad started acting up, ran downstairs, straight into session 2. Ambushed lol. He also did about 20 good minutes with Jose as well. He ran around the whole downstairs though. I had not gotten to clean the living room yet. I woke up, straight to the tub, got the kids clean, and set up for online speech.

I knew the den was clean. The living room on the other hand---my daddy needs to stop drinking. 2 brandy bottles plus a bottle of MD 40/40. I got all the bottles out the way before Brad ran into the living room. Picked up a lot of blankets and clothes as well, but other than that, Im glad I cleaned the kitchen and washroom last night. I cleaned the living room, but I guess it did not do me any good. Willie C. needs to hurry up and find him a place to stay or go back to his wife. I can't be doing all this cleaning two or more days a week (depending on the therapy schedule). It is getting to be too much. At first, it was cleaning the den only for Kalen's sessions. Now, I have to clean everything since Brad is getting in-person sessions (If only, I can keep my child in one place). With all these adults here, someone should at least help keep the living room clean (and stop all this drinking. It's not good for anyone, especially if you have a decent job at a hospital.).

Now I need to go fix some lunch for the kids. Kalen's therapist is coming at 12:30 (Physical therapy).
