Challenge to write 5/2/2013

Tell me one of your favorite comfort foods and Why?
I am late posting this, but one of my favorite comfort foods is ice cream. I love ice cream, whether Mayfield or HEB Creamy Creations. I love some Blue Bell and Ben and Jerry's. Every now and then, I will splurge on some Gelato, Sherbet, or Sorbet. Im waiting on HEB to bring back the honey and strawberry flavor.

I love the different flavors and textures. Last month, I bought some Mexican Chocolate Ice Cream and some Strawberry Shortcake. I also love Cookies and Cream and willing to try anything with Chocolate.

Advice for Seekers

I read Advice for Seekers, in exchange for review from New Leaf Publishing Group. The book was written by Charles H. Spurgeon. The book was also published by Attic Books, A division of New Leaf Publishing Group. I received a paperback of the book. Currently, the paperback is available on Amazon for $4.00 and the kindle version is $1.75. The print version is 11.69 (on sale), but 14.99 regular price.

About the author: (Copied from NLPG)

Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834 to 1892) remains a respected and influential source of inspiration and study. His classic collections of devotions for morning and evening remain a beloved treasure of wisdom and teaching for Christians.

About the book:

First, the book is a reproduction of the 1890's classic work.
The book focused on "removing the barriers we too often place between our faith and God's love" (Copied from the back of the book).

I chose the book because I wanted to read more Christian-based books, especially practical knowledge and theology. I tried to get into the book, but it is a lot of language, I did not understand. For example, "There is no attribute  of God, which self-righteousness does not impugn" (p. 2). Luckily, my mother reads a lot of theology and helped on some of the passages. I definitely recommend pulling up a dictionary as you read the book.  You will see such words as comest, contemned, thee, doth, seeketh, and tis. Some passages are just hard to read. I am still reading and re-reading the book for understanding.

A noble groom (book review and giveaway)

I read A Noble Groom, in exchange for review from Litfuse. The book was written by Judy Hedlund and published by Bethany house.

About the book: (COPIED FROM LITFUSE)
Annalisa Werner’s hope for a fairy tale love is over. Her husband failed her in every way and now his death has left her with few options to save the family farm. She needs a plentiful harvest. That, and a husband to help bring it in. Someone strong, dependable. That’ll be enough. A marriage for love…that’s something she’s given up on.

So her father sends a letter to his brother in the Old Country, asking him to find Annalisa a groom.

Then a man appears: Carl Richards, from their home country of Germany and a former schoolteacher–or so he says. He’s looking for work and will serve on the farm until her husband arrives.

With time running out, she accepts his help, but there’s more to this man than he’s admitting. He’s also gentle, kind, charming–unlike any man she’s ever known. But even as Carl is shining light into the darkness of her heart, she knows her true groom may arrive any day.

About the author: (Copied from Litfuse)

Jody Hedlund is an award-winning and bestselling historical fiction author. She won the 2011 Inspirational Reader’s Choice Award, the 2011 Award of Excellence from the Colorado Romance Writers and was a finalist for Best Debut Novel in the 2011 ACFW Carol Awards. Currently she makes her home in central Michigan, with her husband and five busy children. She loves hearing from readers on Facebook and on her blog. My Review:

I chose this book, based on the description. Annalisa has given up on love, but willing to marry for convenience. I have had this thought as well. I am getting older and I have two young kids. Sometimes, I am willing to re-marry for other reasons besides love (like stability and help with the kids). I also have read Hedlund's book, Unending Devotion, in exchange for review from Bethany House. I loved the imagery and scenery in Unending Devotion.

A noble groom is also a historical piece, set in the  late 1800's. The first scene was powerful. Annalisa's husband had stolen her money. Her daughter was also helping her gather nuts for the pending winter. Annalisa had to save all she could, especially with out a stable husband, helping to bring in income. She was angry and frustrated. Her husband, Hans, had a gambling problem. He gambled off their farm profits.  I definitely understood where Annalisa was coming from. A few hundred years ago (sometime in the early 2000's), my ex-husband got laid off. He told me that he did not qualify for unemployment. My check was also being garnished for student loans, so I already had to work more to make up for the missing funds plus still pay bills. I was working 7 days a week to cover all the bills, in addition to borrowing money from family and friends. Found out months later, my ex was collecting an unemployment check, but was not contributing to the household. He left the cash and receipts in his car. I was hurt. I don't know where his money was going or who, but it definitely hurt me.

Annalisa needed a husband to help with the family and the farm. Annalisa went to confront her husband with child in tow, and found her husband dead. (amazing scene). Annalisa's father wanted her to have a new husband to help out.

Darkness Before Dawn

I read Darkness Before Dawn, in exchange for review from Litfuse. The book was written by Ace Collins and published by Abingdon Press

About the Author: (copied from Litfuse):

His books have become movies and network television specials. Ace Collins has sold more than 1.5 million books during his career and makes his home in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. AceCollins.com

Find out more about Ace athttp://acecollins.com.

I chose this book because I loved the description. The book is about Meg Richards, a nurse, whose husband is killed in a car accident by a minor. He was on his way home to see his wife. It was their anniversary weekend. The same night he dies, she also finds out she is pregnant. Meg starts to hate God and wants revenge against her husband's killer. I have not finished the book yet, but this book is moving so far. Some scenes were hard to take in. One, in particular, was Meg rushing to the hospital to view her husband's body. Another, was the scene with her mother, right after the funeral. That scene also started Meg thinking about revenge. The third scene, which stood out, was in the hospital, where the doctor told her she was pregnant, right after viewing Steve's body. Meg does not understand why her husband had to die. He had a good job, well-respected, a community leader, worked in the church, and was a Christian.

I had to start re-reading the book this morning. The scenes and imagery was powerful. This book was one woman's account of her emotions during a storm. But, with each storm, a rainbow appears. Storms don't last always. (I will update this post, once I finish the last half of the book).

How to Write A Book Review Blog Tour

How-To-Write-A-Review-Banner.jpg

My review:
I read How to Write a Book Review, in exchange for a honest review from Celestial Book Promotions. The book was written by Rebecca Graf.  I chose this book because I been doing book reviews since October 2012 for a few companies. I also write books and understand the power of reviews--positive and negative I also post book reviews in five locations: Perfect Chaos, LibraryThing, Shelfari, Goodreads, and Amazon. Writing a book review--a generic review is easy, but book review companies don't want a simple  I liked this book. It moved me. The companies and authors want to know why you liked the book and why it moved you? How many stars would you rate it? What do you think about cover design? They also want you to post your review in multiple places, especially a blog and Amazon. Barnes and Noble is also good site, in addition to Shelfari and Goodreads. Librarything is also good place to post reviews. The additional reviews give more people a chance to decide to purchase or borrow the book. Another benefit of posting book reviews on Amazon--that wonderful email, which says, Someone liked your review and found it helpful.

On to the book:

One of the first, things, which stood out, was the author page. Even though the book is non-fiction, part of the author page says it is fiction and all characters are from the author's imagination.

The first section discussed how a book review is a critique. The reader needs to look at the plot, the characters, dialogue, grammar, structure, etc. Does the first few pages make you want to read more? What do you like? What don't you like? Next, a book review is a recommendation. Would you recommend this book to others? Why or why not? Another thing, which stood out, was not making a review too personal or biased. Reviews still need to be honest, but you don't want to take it too far out there. I read a book review a few weeks ago, where the reader seriously attacked the author, the publisher, and the book. The publisher decided to post the review on the Facebook Fan page. The funny/not so funny part was the reviewer was an author with the publishing company. It may affect his future sales and contract with the company. That review was also shared to multiple groups and walls on Facebook. Third, a book review is a reflection of you. How did the book affect you? Was the dialogue moving? Did it make you cry? Did it make you upset? Fourth, a book review is encouragement to the author. Be positive. Point out what was good and what was based, based on what you read. Fifth, as I previously stated, a review needs to be honest. If you can't be honest, don't write a review. If you did not read or skim through the book, do not write a review.

Rebecca also discusses the purpose of a book review. The purpose is to provide an honest opinion of the book. The reviewer can also give a warning. If the book has too much language or sex, the reviewer can mention this. If the review mentions a sensitive topic, such as abuse, rape, molestation, a reviewer can mention this.  Next, a review needs to be unbiased. The book has nothing to do with the author and vice versa. If you don't like the author, but the book is good, don't attack the author. Write about the book. Keep in mind, the review will always be attached to you. Even if you delete it or edit it, someone may remember your book review. A review can also help the author improve the book (flat characters, plot development, spelling and grammar.. etc).

Another good point is to read the book you are reviewing (completely).   I admit I have not completely read all of the books I am reviewing. Some I read completely, Some I read most of it, and some are still sitting in a bin or Kindle waiting on Stacie to make a move. Rebecca also discussed how reviewers should take notes as they go along (which I do, do).

Finally, I liked how the author discussed how to write a negative review. Sometimes, the sentences don't flow. Sometimes, the dialogue is off. Other issues may be redundant words, confusing plot, and too little narrative. For example, I received an ARC (advanced readers copy) of a book on Netgalley, a few months ago. I have heard of the author, but never read his work. I knew the book had sex in it. The first 20 or so pages, was nothing but the main character discussing what she liked and did not like sexually. No plot, no narrative, no background into the plot of the book. I could not review this book and did not. I also had someone review my book. I mentioned it had sexual content before sending out the book. The reviewer stated the book was too sexual and could not get into it. I understand her point, but it did hurt at first.

Some points to make when doing negative review:

  • Look for the positive. You like the author or the cover.
  • Explain why you thought the book was bad (but don't say bad)
  • Be nice and polite. Do not attack the author.

Lastly, the author discussed doing a book review template, if you do regular reviews; where to post reviews; rating a book; and reviewing fiction versus non-fiction reviews. In the end, she discussed book review no-nos--some of which, I am guilty of (do not review the cover). I have reviewed covers before--because I used to attend graphic design school. I love a good cover. Other no-nos:

  • No personal attacks
  • No foul language
  • No hateful words
  • No sarcasm
  • Do not review a book based on preference, instead of quality. if you don't like zombies, do not read or review the book, unless you can put personal feelings aside.
  • Do not include a review of the cover

What is my favorite memory from childhood?

I am not sure of my favorite memory from childhood. I was diagnosed with seizures and epilepsy at 14. Lasted two years. Some of my memories are in bits and pieces, or not there at all. I remember the family going to Splash Town every year. I remember myself riding the Lazy River, because I can not swim. What better way to have fun, other than an inner tube, around a calm river. I also enjoyed the wave pool. I made sure  I never went past 5 ft because I am 5ft 2 inches. I do not want to drown. I found this old pics on my Facebook page. This pics were taken at Splashtown a long, long, long time ago, maybe 1999 or 2000.

The Reason for this Giveaway

We are raising money for ROMP Rescue 501(c)(3) a modest rescue working to get adoptable animals out of packed Los Angeles area shelters & into loving, forever homes. ROMP Playful Pet Services' creator, Paul Duff, shocked by the horrific overcrowding of adoptable animals in Los Angeles City Shelters, set about actively gathering other like minded rescuers and began saving lives. With the support of volunteers, the "little rescue that could" obtained its 501(c)(3) certification and proceeded to make a difference in the lives of animals and people in and outside of Los Angeles.

This money goes to food, transport, medical care, boarding, and other costly things. Every dollar counts towards saving a dog's life.
