One of the happiest days is coming in less than a month. Both of my kids are going back to school. Brad currently is in ESY but ESY ends in a week. Then, the real fun begins. 2-3 weeks off until school starts back. A few days before school will be another adventure: A cruise to the Bahamas. First time, I am cruising with my children. First time for my sisters, nephew, and nieces as well.
I remember how my mother used to shop for Back to school: We would put our school clothes on layaway during the summer, in hopes the clothes would still fit. Then, she would buy supplies as needed based on sales. Sometimes, she would buy the pre-packaged bag based on school and grade.
For me, it's been different. I only had 3 years of school experience. My oldest son, started school with his father because we was separated. He only been living with me, alone, for the last 3 years. When he got here, I had two weeks to scramble to get him in school. I had to transfer his medicaid, his SSI, hunt down shot records because his father forgot to include them. I had to fill out the free lunch forms and the transportation forms. Not to mention, a last-minute ARD/IEP meeting because he is special needs.
Then we have school supplies. I had to wait for school to start to get his school supplies. The special needs list is different than the regular school list. You have his personal care items on top of the school supply items.
And on to Kalen. Kalen started school in May, 2014. He is enrolled in the Preschool for Children with Developmental Disabilities. Since he started late, he did not qualify for ESY during the summer. August, 2014 will be his first full year of school. I didn't buy supplies earlier because he started so late, but now, I have to buy double supplies for both kids.
