When we were on fire by Addie Zierman Book Review (Blogging for Books)

I read When We Were on Fire: A Memoir of Consuming Faith, Tangled Love, and Starting Over, in exchange for honest review from Blogging for Books. The book was written by Addie Zierman and published by Convergent. I received a paperback copy of the book.

The author talked about how in the 90s, more people was on fire for God. People wore the WWJD bracelet, listening to DC Talk sing "What would people do if I found out I was a Jesus Freak?" (Don't know if the song came out in the 90s or 2000s, but good song :-).

People have lost their zeal for God. We need to rekindle the fire and develop a new passion for God. In the 90s, I hit double digits: 10. That decade went by in a blur. I was diagnosed with seizures and epilepsy. I started wearing glasses. I had a brief liaison with contact lenses.  I graduated high school in 1998. I was not on fire for God. I never had a WWJD bracelet. I went to church but didn't participate. Didn't bother with Sunday School or memorizing a bible verse. In fact, I never bothered with Sunday School until I was a member of First Assembly of God in Griffin, GA, then a lapse again until I found FallBrook, two years ago. I never been to vacation bible school as a participant or bible camp. I believed in God but I was not a follower. I was a fan.

I went on to college and met the soon-to-be-husband and now ex-husband online. I got engaged. That was my 90s.

The book is part memoir, part humor, and is a good read overall. I loved the story about the boy and marshmallows towards the beginning of the book. The boy wants a marshmallow. The mom says no. The boy eats some anyway and while everyone else is enjoying hot chocolate and marshmallows, the boy doesn't get any marshmallows in his chocolate because mom ran out. The story's moral was the consequences of sin. If the boy had did what his mother said and waited, he would have a big cup of hot chocolate with marshmallows. Since he couldn't wait, he didn't get to enjoy a nice reward with the rest of the guests at the party. He was sad.

The same applies in life. When we do not do what God says, we must face the consequences of our actions. We miss the reward.
